FEATURED PROJECT
Dot is a single woman, 44 years of age who was born an achondroplastic dwarf. She stands 3' 10" and for most of her life has done quite well making due in a world catering to much larger people. In 2004, Dot underwent surgery for a debilitating back condition common to Little People. The operation was risky but she went forward hoping for the best.
Dot emerged from the operation unable to walk at all. She has fought her way back and is today able to walk short distances with the assistance of a walker. She spends most of her time, however, in her motorized wheel chair.
Dot has had to learn to adapt to her wheelchair environment. Like the average wheelchair bound person, Dot cannot reach most counters, light switches and kitchen appliances. As a dwarf, however, Dot has an additional difficulty, very short arms. She is unable to reach above her head.
Accessible Home USA was there to provide Dot and her average sized roommates with a living environment that adapts to all their needs. For the common kitchen area, Accessible Home USA utilized Universal Design elements, providing sink and range tops that can be lowered to a comfortable height for Dot while she is on foot and raised to accommodate her needs if she is in her wheel chair. They can also be adjusted again to accommodate the needs of her two roommates both of average height.
Accessible Home USA was also able help Dot with her bedroom and bath needs by converting a small family room and adjacent bedroom into a bedroom/bath suite. All the one-way swinging doors were removed and replaced with sliders or two-way swinging doors. Next a custom, barrier-free shower was build for Dot with controls placed well within her reach. The company was able to locate and install a specialized toilet that met her special needs and found and installed a mini front load washer/dryer set so she could do her laundry.
